James A. Figueroa and Walfred J. Fassler to be Honored at
CSLA Distinguished Educator Awards Dinner

Los Angeles, California -- October 18, 1996 -- On Thursday,
November 14
, 1996, the Friends of the Charter School of Education
at California State University, Los Angeles will honor James
A. Figueroa
and Walfred J. (Wally) Fassler at the seventh
annual Distinguished Educator Awards Dinner
. The distinguished
awards are presented annually to recognize leaders in the field
of education whose lives and careers have made a difference for
students in the public schools. The event, to be held at the
Almansor Court Restaurant in Alhambra, will begin with a reception
at 5 p.m. followed by a dinner at 6 p.m.

James A. Figueroa, the recipient of this year's Distinguished
Educator Award, is the assistant superintendent for the Los Angeles
Unified School District's Division of Adult and Career Education,
the nation's largest public school adult education system. In
his capacity, Figueroa oversees a budget of $200 million with
a staff of 3,500 full-time teachers and 1,500 support personnel.
The Division of Adult and Career Education annually serves 400,000
adult and young adult students in 26 community adult schools,
ten occupational and skill centers, and the regional occupational

Figueroa received his bachelor's degree in 1963 and master's degree
in 1970 from Cal State L.A. He was the recipient of the 1993 Los
Ninos Heroes Award and the 1995 District Administrator of the
Year Award. He has been assistant principal for Evans Community
Adult School, principal for Roosevelt Community Adult School and
director for Adult Education in the Division of Adult and Occupational
Education. He currently serves on the boards of directors of
the Achievement Council, Economics America of California, Institute
of Natural Medicine and National Alliance of Business-Western

Walfred J. (Wally) Fassler, the recipient of the Honorary
Distinguished Educator Award, is the regional vice president for
Chevron Products Company. He currently coordinates Chevron's
public affairs activities in Southern California and Arizona,
and serves as the principal representative dealing with the public,
government agencies, educational institutions, trade associations,
community and business groups in Southern California. He began
his career with Chevron in 1956 working in service station maintenance
and retail sales.

Fassler received his bachelor's degree in business administration
from Golden Gate University in San Francisco. He is on the Los
Angeles Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors Executive Committee
and is chair of its Education Committee. In addition, he serves
on the boards of USC School of Public Administration, California
State University Foundation, Independent Colleges of Southern
California, Achievement Council and American Red Cross, L.A. Chapter.

The Friends of the Charter School of Education is a support group
of alumni, educators and community members whose principal objectives
are to give scholarship assistance to men and women enrolled in
the University's Charter School of Education and to support other
activities of the School. These scholarships assist future educators
