‘The HeArt of Caregiving’ celebrates those who aid older adults
About 20 CSULA social work, gerontology students to volunteer
at the Inglewood Senior Center Saturday
Los Angeles, CA -- With a growing aging population in the greater Los Angeles communities, caregivers who provide care to the chronically ill or disabled among older adults become increasingly important.
About 20 Cal State L.A. students who will be entering the fields of social work and gerontology will see how the arts bring joy to caregivers of older adults at “The HeArt of Caregiving”—a free celebration praising those caregivers.
The fun-filled informational event, presented by Our Community Caregiver Café, will be held Saturday, February 13, 1:30-430 p.m., at the Inglewood Senior Center.
Led by CSULA social work alumna Oteka Macklin, students from Cal State L.A.’s Social Policy and Aging class will volunteer at the event. The class is taught by CSULA Professor Connie Corley, a member of the steering committee of Our Community Caregiving Café. Corley also directs programming at the Lifelong Learning Program in the Applied Gerontology Institute at Cal State L.A.
Along with entertainment by renowned jazz-blues singer Barbara Morrison and the Crenshaw High School Elite Choir, the Feb. 13 celebration will include a magic show, food, raffle prizes, workshops and vendors. Discussions will focus on caregivers’ continued self-enhancement and resilience.
