| Cal State L.A. Names LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A. head menÂs basketball coach Dave Yanai announced today the hiring of former Syracuse All-American Stephen Thompson and former UCLA shooting guard Brandon Loyd as assistant coaches for the Golden Eagles. Thompson, a Los Angeles native and Crenshaw High School graduate, was a three-year starter at Syracuse from 1986-1990, including the 1987 squad which made the NCAA Championship Game against Indiana. He was named Honorable Mention All-America by AP and The Sporting News in both 1989 and 1990 and the BIG EAST MenÂs Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1990. Thompson currently holds the Orangemen career mark for games played (144); ranks fifth in both career scoring (1,956) and career field goal percentage (.560); and tied for 11th in career steals (184). He played with the NBAÂs Orlando Magic, Sacramento Kings and Denver Nuggets, in addition to playing professionally in Europe and Japan. This past year, Thompson served as Athletic Director for the Coast Christian School in Redondo Beach, while continuing his roles as Co-Founder and Director of the Give & Go Basketball Academy as well as coach for the Southern California All-Stars. Loyd played four seasons across town for the UCLA Bruins from 1996-1999, taking part in four NCAA Tournaments. The 1997 squad made the ÂElite Eight while the the 1998 team advanced to the ÂSweet 16. LoydÂs hustle and offensive prowess made him a great commodity on both ends of the floor. He shot .373 (53-of-142) from beyond the arc in his four seasons, including a blistering 6-of-11 from three-point range in his seven career NCAA tournament games. ÂStephen and Brandon bring a lot of success to our program, said head coach Dave Yanai. ÂBoth experienced a great deal of NCAA Division I Tournament success as collegiate players and Stephen adds another decade of professional playing experience to our coaching staff. ThereÂs no question their experience and knowledge will help us in our quest for championships.Â
