Acting Dean Named for Cal State L.A.Âs
Los Angeles, CA -- California State University, Los Angeles announces that Alfredo Gonzalez (West Covina resident) has agreed to serve as Acting Dean of the College of Health and Human Services, from November 1, 2001, until the appointment of a permanent dean.
Dr. Gonzalez will head the College of Health and Human Services, led by Dean James J. Kelly since 1997. As acting dean of the College of Health and Human Services, Dr. Gonzalez will oversee the departments of Child and Family Studies, Communication Disorders, Criminal Justice, and Kinesiology and Nutritional Science, along with the Roybal Institute for Applied Gerontology and the Schools of Nursing and Social Work. The College also offers certificate programs in Applied Gerontology, Child Maltreatment and Family Violence, Intercultural Proficiency, Youth Agency Administration, and houses the Robert F. Kennedy Fellows programs.
Dr. Gonzalez will continue to serve as Dean of Undergraduate Studies. In this capacity, he provides support for the development, maintenance and improvement of strong undergraduate programs, oversees the implementation of University policy that applies to undergraduate students and is responsible for a number of academic-related support programs and activities, including the General Education Honors Program, the Academic Advisement and Information, and the Tutorial, and University Writing Centers. He also serves as executive secretary to several committees including the Educational Policy Committee.
Dr. Gonzalez came to Cal State L.A. as an assistant professor of sociology and social welfare in the fall of 1977. His fields of interest are community organization, social welfare in minority communities, juvenile delinquency and higher education policy particularly as it affects low income and minority communities. He holds a B.S. degree in social service from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and M.S.W. and D.S.W. degrees from the University of California, Berkeley.
During his tenure at the University, Dr. Gonzalez has served as an associate and acting chair of the Department of Sociology, assistant to the Vice President of Academic Affairs, Associate Dean of the School of Health and Human Services, and Dean of Undergraduate Studies since 1989.
