Nov. 22 lecture discusses hospital approach to child abuse cases
Funding supports UCEDD partnership with Cal State L.A.
Los Angeles, CA – “Calls to the Child Abuse Hotline [in Los Angeles County] jumped from 39,611 in the first half of last year to 43,693 in the same period this year,” cites a recent L.A. Daily News article.
To address the needs of the growing population of “abused” children, Cal State L.A. (CSULA)—in collaboration with the USC University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD)—will present a dialog on “Hospital Teams that Work with Child Abuse and Neglect” with faculty and students in CSULA’s Social Work 456 class Monday, Nov. 22.
Dr. Karen Imagawa, director of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles CARES Team, will begin speaking at 9:50 a.m., in Salazar Hall 137, on her experience leading a multidisciplinary hospital team, with a focus on child abuse and neglect. In this context, Imagawa and her team evaluate many children with disabilities, and she will also address the needs of this population.
Immediately following Imagawa’s lecture, Alex French, MSW, will discuss her experience as a social worker on a hospital multidisciplinary team. She will focus on team dynamics, especially when the team is dealing with a child abuse or neglect case.
The UCEDD at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles received a three-year, $675,000 grant last fall from the Administration on Developmental Disabilities to fund this UCEDD/Minority Institution of Higher Education Partnership with CSULA.
Working specifically with CSULA’s College of Health and Human Services, Charter College of Education and Minority Opportunities in Research Programs, the UCEDD provides CSULA students with interdisciplinary training and practical experience with individuals who have a wide range of disabilities, exposure to career opportunities in the disability field, and leadership training.
Looking ahead, the UCEDD-CSULA partnership—in collaboration with the Pat Brown Institute at Cal State L.A.—will present a colloquium, entitled “Cultural Sensitivity in Identifying Developmental Disabilities Among Children Raised by Grandparents,” Thursday, March 3, 2011.
UCEDD is a nationally-recognized leader in developing and supporting quality services and systems for individuals with, or at risk for, behavioral, developmental and/or special healthcare needs and their families.
