as CSU, congregations team to draw African Americans to college

Los Angeles, CA – To encourage and guide young African Americans toward higher education and the success it can foster, California State University leaders will visit 25 Los Angeles-area churches Feb. 22 as part of the CSU’s fourth annual Super Sunday outreach program.

From Cal State L.A., for example, President James M. Rosser will speak at the 9 a.m. service of the Full Harvest International church in Gardena and Vice President for Student Affairs Tony Ross will address the congregation at the Second Baptist Church in Santa Ana at 8 a.m.

Super Sunday involves CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed, trustees, and leaders from all 23 CSU campuses. Earlier this month, CSU representatives visited more than 40 churches in Northern California and San Bernardino.

Last year Rosser told the congregation at Crenshaw Christian Center in Los Angeles, “We’re not just standing by to help. We’re coming by to help. We’re reaching more than half-way to pull underserved students to college. There is plenty we all can do, whether or not we have school-aged children.”

According to CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed, “We hope to make communities aware of the steps that students need to complete each year to get to college. We are pleased to say that these efforts are paying off. Since Super Sunday began, the CSU has seen steady increases in African American undergraduate enrollment.”

In their remarks, CSU leaders consistently urge young African Americans to plan early for college.

Following the services, CSU outreach staff and church education counselors provide information about college applications and financial aid. Participants are also introduced to CSU Mentor, the website that helps them apply to a CSU campus. They also receive the “How to Get to College” poster, which provides schoolchildren and their parents with grade-by-grade planning steps for college.
