Services for Students with
Physical Disabilities
OSD provides a variety of services for those
with physical disabilities. Click on the following links for specific information.
TRANSPORTATION
CSULA is connected to the greater Los Angeles community's transportation
network. There is a Metrolink rail station and MTA bus terminal
located at the south of campus; the campus is less than five miles miles
from Union Station and connection to the Red line of Metro Rail.
Metro Access provides services to CSULA students as well. The University
Police operate shuttle buses on and around campus. Some of the shuttles
are equipped with wheelchair lifts. Back to

PARKING
Students with disabilities may apply at OSD for a disabled parking
decal. Students with temporary disabilities due to medical reasons or accident
may qualify for temporary disabled parking. You must bring medical verification
of your disability specifying your need for disabled parking. The medical
verification should specify how long you will need parking. Every student,
staff, and faculty member must display a valid university parking permit
when parking on university property. Back

FIRE AND EMERGENCY EVACUATIONS
The issue of safe evacuation in case of a fire, earthquake, or other
emergency is an important concern on this campus. OSD will request a copy
of your schedule every quarter. The major problem is that, during an emergency,
most elevators cease to operate. Therefore, the best method for your evacuation
in a particular situation becomes most important. You should consider the
following guidelines when you are making an evacuation plan or are evacuating:
-
If you have an attendant, the two of you should discuss emergency evacuation
plans.
-
If you live in student housing, discuss your plans and carrying techniques
with your resident assistant and other persons who might be available to
assist you.
-
If you are unable to use the stairways independently, it may sometimes
be advisable to remain near an elevator or major stairway to allow fire
department or security personnel to locate you quickly.
-
If you are in a class in session, notify the instructor or faculty of your
need of assistance.
-
Keep as many closed doors as possible between you and the fire. Seal off
the cracks with clothing or bed linens.
-
If you have a window to the outside, make sure the door is closed, then
open the window slightly and signal the fire fighters.
-
Call 911 to alert the fire department of your location. Have emergency
numbers and a phone near your bed.
These guidelines are offered as general suggestions and not an official
plan of action. Your safety depends on your judgment and knowledge of general
safety precautions.Back to Top of Page
LAB ASSISTANTS
OSD will provide lab assistants when necessary. Students guide the
lab assistant through all of the steps in the experiment being conducted.
The assistant is intended to act as the student's hands or eyes for the
purpose of accommodating the student's disability. All conclusions that
result from the lab exercise are the responsibility of the student. Back
