Immunization Facts:
You may be wondering why Cal State L.A. and other
universities require students to provide proof of
immunization against measles and rubella. Immunizations
are an important component of community health. They
provide protection against diseases which can cause
significant morbidity (illness) in a population. Today,
diseases like small pox and polio are not significant
threats to public health because of successful
immunization efforts.
The Student Health Center provides immunizations for
Hepatitis B, Hepatitis A, Influenza,
Measles/Mumps/Rubella, Tetanus/Diphtheria, and Varicella
(chicken pox).
Tuberculosis Facts:
Tuberculosis (TB) screening is often required for entry into
universities, employment in healthcare, education and
other disciplines because TB is a significant public
health problem. TB is an infectious disease that
primarily affects the lungs. TB is caused by a bacteria
which is spread when someone inhales droplets containing
the TB bacteria which have been expelled by an infectious
person through coughing, sneezing or even talking.
It is important to note that there is a difference
between TB infection and TB disease.
Someone with TB infection has the TB bacteria, but their
immune system keeps the bacteria under control. The
person usually does not have any symptoms and is not
infectious. A small percentage of people with TB
infection will go on to develop TB disease. These
individuals are capable of infecting others and may have
symptoms which include a cough that does not go away,
coughing up blood, feeling tired all the time, loss of
appetite, and night sweats (these symptoms may also be
signs of other health conditions - check with your
healthcare provider if you have these symptoms).
Prophylactic (preventive) medications are available
which can lower the risk that an infected person will
develop TB disease. For more information about
tuberculosis contact the American Lung Association at www.lungusa.org.
