Federal Work Study

The Work Study Program is a financial aid employment program that is applied for via the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). At Cal State L.A., approximately 500 financially needy students receive these awards annually. Work Study allows students to work to earn money to help pay for educational expenses.

Work Study funds are limited.

Priority awarding of Work Study is given to those students who worked on the program the previous year.  Financial aid recipients who have never worked on the program but are interested in it must record a preference for Work Study on the FAN Change Form.

Work Study awards range from $1000 to $4,500, depending on the student's financial need. The Work Study year (as well as the financial aid year) runs from Summer Quarter through the following Spring Quarter, and students must be enrolled at least half-time to use their Work Study.

Students will receive notification of a Work Study offer on the Financial Aid Award Notification (FAN) letter. In order for a student to view available Work Study positions, they must take a copy of their FAN letter to the Center for Career Planning and Placement. Work Study will be canceled for awardees who fail to become employed by September or October.

Work Study positions are available both on-campus and off-campus. The off-campus jobs usually involve community servce, such as tutoring and counseling in the local public schools.

For a listing of available Work Study positions, visit the Center for Career Planning and Placement or call (323) 343-3237.
