Grants

All financial aid grants are need-based programs.

Federal Pell Grant

The Federal Pell Grant is offered to eligible undergraduate students and serves as the foundation for eligibility in other federal and state need-based grant and loan programs. Annual awards for full-time students range from $400 to $4,050.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) is a federally funded grant program awarded to eligible undergraduate students with exceptional financial need. Funds are limited. The maximum annual award amount is $1,600.

Cal Grant A

Cal Grant A is a state-funded program awarded by the California Student Aid Commission. Cal Grant A is available to California residents who complete their FAFSA and a Cal Grant GPA Verification Form by the March 2 deadline and meet other criteria, such as financial need and academic merit. Cal Grant A is renewable for up to three additional years and it covers the State University fees, which is a portion of the registration fees. The maximum award amount for 2006-2007 is $2,334.

Cal Grant B

Cal Grant B is a state-funded program awarded by the California Student Aid Commission. Cal Grant B is available to entering freshmen are financially needy California residents from disadvantaged backgrounds who filed their FAFSA's and Cal Grant GPA Verifivation Forms by the March 2 deadline.  Cal Grant B is renewable for up to three additional years. The maximum first year award is $1,551 for subsistence. The maximum renewal award amount is $3,885: this includes $1,551 for subsistence and $2,334 for State University fees.

Students cannot receive both Cal Grant A and Cal Grant B.

State University Grant

The State University Grant (SUG) is a state-funded award that covers the State University fees, which is a portion of the registration fees.  The SUG is available to undergraduate, credential, and classified graduate students. To be considered for the SUG, students must show financial need and be California residents.  Funds are limited. The maximum award amount for undergraduates for 2006-2007 is $3,016: for graduates, it is $3,572.

Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Grant

The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Grant is a state-funded program that offers financial assistance to undergraduate California residents who demonstrate extreme economic and educational disadvantage. Eligible students must be admitted to Cal State L.A. by the Educational Opportunity Program and demonstrate financial need. For information regarding admission to the EOP program, please call (323) 343-4367. Funds are limited. The maximum award amount for 2006-2007 is $1,333.

Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)

First year
Eligibilities

  • U.S. citizen
  • Must be a Pell Grant Recipient
  • Full time enrollment
  • Must meet SAP
  • Must have graduated from high school after 1/1/2006
  • Must complete rigorous high school courses
  • Must have less than 45 quarter units (include transfer units)
  • t the time of disbursement (IP courses will be excluded from the total calculation)
  • Maximum award is $750 for one award year (Maximum award is $250/term)

Second year
Eligibilities

  • U.S. citizen
  • Must be a Pell Grant Recipient
  • Must meet SAP
  • Full time enrollment
  • Must have graduated from high school after 1/1/2005
    Must complete rigorous high school courses
  • Must have 45 quarter units or greater and less than 90 quarter units (included transfer units but excluding IP courses) at the time of disbursement
  • Must have 3.0 cumulative GPA at the time of disbursement
  • Maximum award is $1,300 for one award year (Maximum award is $425/term

Student’s who believe they may be eligible for the ACG and have not completed the self-certification, may visit the online website: https://fafsa.ed.gov/FOTWWebApp/fotw0607/ACGServlet using their PIN to complete the self-certification requirement.

Special Note:

There are a number of financial aid programs, as well as fee waivers from various outside sources, that are designed specifically to pay student fees. If you are receiving two types of fee-paying awards at the same time, you should know that you can receive a maximum of $1,200 per quarter from these programs. You cannot receive the full amount from both programs.
