Do I need to
apply for financial aid every year?
Yes! You must apply for financial aid every
year. The priority filing period is usually
January 1st - March 2nd. To apply you may complete
a FAFSA, a Renewal FAFSA, or use 'FAFSA on the
Web' at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. |

Do I have to
wait for admission to Cal State L.A. before
I apply for financial aid?
No! We strongly recommend that you file the
FAFSA during the priority filing period of the
academic year. |

Is
there a deadline to apply for financial aid?
The priority deadline for the 2008-2009 was March
3, 2008. Although March 3 was the deadline, you
may file the 2008-2009 FAFSA up to the last day
of enrollment during the academic year.

How log does
it take for my financial aid application to
be processed?
It normally takes between 4-6 weeks for your
financial aid applications to be processed once
you have submitted all required documentation. |

What types
of financial aid programs are offered at Cal
State L.A.?
There are four types of financial aid:
- Grants - Financial aid
that do not need to be paid back.
- Scholarships - Gift
aid and do not have to be repaid.
- Loans - Loans are funds
that you must repay. Most loans are based
on financial need and are federally funded.
- Federal Work-Study -
Federal Work-Study is a federally funded
program that provides employment opportunities
to students with the highest financial need.

apply for scholarships at Cal State L.A.?
Cal State L.A. scholarships are available once
a year. The University offers a variety of institutional
scholarships based on a students academic record.
Scholarship applications are usually available
in the Financial Aid Office or via our website.
Also, feel free to conduct an on-line scholarship
search using fastWEB.

L.A.?
Federal Work Study (FWS) is a financial aid
employment program that can be applied via the

Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). |

Do I need
to apply for financial aid if all I want is
a loan?
To apply for a loan you must file the FAFSA.
It is used to determine your eligibilities for
the loan. |

How is my
financial aid need level determined?
The information provided on the FAFSA is run
through a series of calculations standardized
by the federal government. The standardized
calculations from your Expected Family Contribution
(EFC) and will be the same no matter what school
you attend. Actual awards will vary from school
to school due to differences in cost of attendance
and/or funding. |

How can I
use my financial aid to pay for registration?
If you have applied early and have already been
awarded prior to the beginning of the quarter,
your registration fees will be subtracted from
your financial aid disbursement. |

Will financial
aid cover on-campus housing expenses?
That will depend on the total amount of your
financial aid award for the academic year. Please
check your Financial Aid Notifications letter
to determine the total amount of your award,
then subtract your registration fees and housing
expenses. |

How many
years can I receive financial aid?
Most financial aid programs do not have a limit on the number
of years you can receive financial aid but you may be limited
by the total number of units you accumulate in your current academic
program. Please review our Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

getting financial aid if I fail some of my courses?
In most cases you will be suspended from receiving financial aid

to the awarding or disbursing of any federal, state or institutional

seeking financial aid must demonstrate satisfactory
academic progress (SAP). |

Do I really
have to repay my student loan?
Yes. All loans are to be repaid by the student
(or parent in some cases) to the lender, per
the agreement signed by the student. Loans are
different than grants and scholarships, which
do not have to be repaid |

You may come into the Center for Student Financial
Aid and pick-up a form or go to the Direct Loan
Servicing Center online at http://www.dlssonline.com/defer/deferlist.asp. |

Can I receive
aid from Cal State L.A. and my community college
at the same time?
You may only receive aid from one school at
a time. |

What type
of aid can I receive if I'm registered through
the 'Continuing or Extended Education' program?
You may be eligible to apply for a private loan.
