Students who are uncertain about major selection or career path can seek guidance by discussing these issues with a career counselor. If deemed appropriate, the counselor may suggest that the student take an assessment test. A description of these tests follow.
Self-Directed Search (SDS): This self-scorable booklet allows students to rate themselves in several different areas, including interests, abilities and experiences. The results provide a preliminary framework for understanding interest patterns as they relate to occupations and fields of study. It is a shorter version of the SII described below.

Strong Interest Inventory (SII): This assessment instrument helps students identify interest patterns and work environments that are appealing to them. The results of the inventory provide a framework for understanding interest patterns as they relate to occupations and fields of study. This test is taken on a computer in our Career Library and costs $6.50. Reserve an hour or so to take the test. The testing must be followed up with a counseling appointment at which the results will be discussed.

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI): The MBTI is a personality assessment that allows the student to better understand how the personality functions best. It is a self-awareness tool that allows us to make more informed decisions based on the many facets of our personalities. This test is taken on a computer in our Career Library and costs $4.75. Reserve an hour or so to take the test. The testing must then be followed up with a counseling appointment at which the results will be discussed.

Many students take both the SII and MBTI on the same day. Both test results are then discussed in the subsequent counseling appointment.

Computer-based Guidance Program

(Any interested student can use CHOICES: no counselor appointment is required).

CHOICES: CHOICES is a computer-assisted career assessment program that focuses on interests, experiences and work-related values. It provides job titles and descriptions, employment outlook information, as well as information on colleges and universities across the U.S., graduate schools and the degree options at those institutions.
