Jen Scappettone, a faculty member in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Chicago, discusses the interplay between poetry and research, specifically the documentary and activist capacities of poetry – how poetry can expose the pathways of responsibility, thus acting in the vein of social and environmental justice. Student scholars present their original research and explore genders, sexualities, feminism and queer identities at this annual conference presented by the Center for the Study of Genders and Sexualities and Cross Cultural Centers. Timothy Morton, an English professor at Rice University, presents from his influential research on “queer ecology” and on the ethical and ecological urgency of creating new forms of solidarity with nonhuman beings. The Fine Arts Gallery will host a one-day children’s exhibition. This year’s LAUSD Fine Arts Program will finish its 37th season with 400 students who will present their work to their families and community. The free 24-week program at Cal State LA is sponsored by the LAUSD Gifted/Talented Performing Arts Programs.
