Through music, spoken word, interactive craft tables, and personal testimonies, come and learn how to empower yourself and make a difference around these issues. Cal State LA's Center for Contemporary Poetry and Poetics welcomes Luis J. Rodriguez as our 2024 reader in the Jean Burden Poetry Series. Through the power of words, this acclaimed poet, novelist, children’s book author and journalist saw his way out of poverty and despair. Successful as a Chicano poet, Rodriguez thought he had put the streets and his own days as a gang member behind him—until his young son joined a gang.

Volunteers will help assemble food packages for more than 29,000 families, older adults, and children who face food insecurity in Los Angeles County. Transportation is provided. R.A.D. is a FREE women's only course that consists of 12 hours of instruction, which covers risk reduction and avoidance, basic hands-on defense training and a dynamic simulation exercise.
