| Purpose and Mission Statement |
The Academic Advisement Bulletin Board provides the University Community, with immediate access to comprehensive information about academic advisement policies and procedures. Because academic advisement is so important to student retention and success, and because the faculty play such a key role in the academic advising process, it is important that faculty have the necessary knowledge, skills and tools to assist them in their roles as academic advisers. It is also essential that students have the knowledge, skills, and tools to properly prepare for their academic advisement sessions and to take a pro-active role with their Academic Adviser in the advisement process.
The University Advisement Bulletin Board has been designed to provide a mechanism through which advisers and students can ask their advisement questions and get timely and definitive answers to those questions.
The purpose of this Advisement Bulletin Board is not to replace one-on-one academic advisement sessions between faculty advisers and students. The purpose is to augment the one-on-one advisement sessions between faculty advisers and students, to help both faculty and students better prepare for the advisement sessions, and to provide a means to clarifying advisement issues, processes, procedures, resulting in better informed faculty advisers and more satisfied students.
The Academic Advisement Bulletin Board does not replace the use of the General Catalog or the Schedule of Classes during advisement sessions. "Advise" augments and clarifies information contained in those resources, when necessary, in accordance with the nature of the academic advisement question.
Faculty and students are encouraged to use the Advisement Bulletin Board, not only to
raise advisement and advisement related questions, but also to view the information that
has already been entered under the various Advisement Topics and Sub Topics listed in the
Table of Contents. In all probability, many of your advisement Qs and A’s
are already on the Bulletin Board.
It is designed to be easily accessed:

What can you expect to find on the Academic Advisement Bulletin Board? |
Example: Q
A: If the student maintained "continuing" student attendance status, the answer is no. By maintaining Continuing Student Status, the student retains the original Catalog date of Fall 1990. This is because the student maintained continuous enrollment (did not break matriculation) with the California Community College District system and the CSU system. If the student did not maintain "continuing" student status (in accordance with University policy) prior to entering CSLA beginning Summer Quarter 1993, then English 102 is required. The date used to determine the English 102 requirement is the date the student entered CSLA and/or when the student started college and/or whether the student maintained "Continuing Student Status" (California Community College, another California State University, or a combination of these).
The Catalog used to determine English 102 requirement is the Students General Education Catalog Date.

"Advise" Qs
and As address advisement policies and procedures,
university requirements, and general education and major program requirements. Advisement
information on "Advise" includes everything from graduation issues, to
transfer and articulation agreements. Additionally, the bulletin board is used to update
the campus community on changes in university policies and regulations as they are
approved. This reduces the wait for dissemination of this information in the General
Catalog and the Schedule of Classes. The use of "Advise" should result in
fewer advisement errors and will provide more timely answers and solutions to advisement
questions and problems.
If you have academic advisement related questions such as the ones listed below,
then "Advise" is for you!
Q. Which date is used to determine the
English 102 requirement?
Q. How does G.E. Catalog date and continuing
student status affect the English 102 requirement?
Q. What are the recent changes policy in the
use of the Repeat Course Petition for academic renewal?
Q. How is Advanced Placement Test Credit
obtained for Pols 150?
Q. What is the process for substituting G.E.

Q. If courses are required for both a major

from the ELM and EPT?
The Academic Advisement Center identified approximately 200 advisement Questions through the use of an academic advisement
questionnaire distributed during Winter 1995. These questions along with the answers to
them were entered on the "Advise" site and provide the framework for
organizing the advisement Topics and Subtopics on advisement
questions and related issues.
Specific Questions and Answers are found under the Subtopics.
| Step 1: | Some of your advisement Questions and Answers to those questions may already be on the "Advise"
Advisement Bulletin Board. Simply scroll through the MAIN TOPICS AND SUBTOPICS to see if your specific advisement question/issue/concern and corresponding answer is already on the "Advise" Bulletin Board QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS. Select the Topic, Subtopic and scroll through the Questions and Answers. |
| Step 2: | If you do not find your specific advisement question and answer already posted on the
Academic Advisement Bulletin Board, simply click on the new posting icon. Type in your advisement related question(s). Include your name, email address, and phone number. |
| Step 3: | Look for the answer(s) to your question(s) within 24 hours (excluding weekends). Please note that additional turn around response time may be required for advisement questions that may require more in-depth research on the part of Academic Advisement Center prior to replying and posing the "definitive" answer for the campus community to see. |
