Advising regarding the "U.S. Constitution" and "State/Local Gov't" requirements:

Almost always an out-of-state American politics course meets the "U.S. Constitution" requirement, but unless the course covered the California constitution and government, courses out of state don't meet the "State/Local Gov't" requirement.

For those students, the Department of Political Science has a two unit course on "California State and Local Government", POLS 200, which is offered every quarter by Credit by Exam and every once in a while in the classroom.

To enroll in a course on a "Credit by Exam" basis, students must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be in good standing
  2. Be officially enrolled in one or more residence courses
  3. Add the course by the 5th week of the quarter in which the examination is to be taken

Students should be sent to the Department of Political Science for an information sheet. Page 90 of the current catalog covers the rules for Credit by Examination.

The same policy is followed for students who have AP American government credit - since the exam does not cover California Government and Politics.

American government courses fall into the following categories:

  1. POLS 150, Cal State LA - OK for U.S. constitution and State/Local Gov't requirements.
  2. American politics course at any California community college - most of these are articulated and meet both requirements.
  3. American politics course at any CSU - these all meet both requirements
  4. American politics course at any UC - some do not meet the California State/Local Gov't requirement. Most do.
  5. American politics course taken out of state - I have never seen one that met the California State/Local Gov't requirement
