It is very important that, as a first step, you buy the
University Catalog and the Schedule of Classes at the University
Square bookstore, located in the University-Student Union. Thoroughly read all sections
that pertain to registration and keep both the schedule and the catalog handy. Remember,
you are responsible for knowing the contents, and your advisement sessions will be much
more beneficial if you are well prepared. Following is a brief summary of the contents
of the catalog and class schedule.

every other year, contains regulations, requirements and policies for Cal State L.A.
students. Also included are complete academic programs of all types (degrees, credentials,
certificates, minors, etc.) and descriptions (including prerequisites and corequisites) of
all courses contained within those programs. General information about the campus, student
services, complete lists of full-time faculty and administrators, and other important
details are included in the catalog.

printed every quarter and is generally available about two weeks before registration
for continuing students begins.

- changes in academic programs and courses
- the General Education program

Using the class schedule and catalog for reference, carefully review the requirements
for your major before you plan your first quarter program. Jot down questions to ask your
academic adviser when you present your course list for approval and signature. Many
courses have prerequisites and/or corequisites; these are listed in the catalog. Other
restrictions are listed as footnotes in the class schedule. Be sure to check these
restrictions before attempting to enroll in classes each quarter. Plan your academic
program to ensure that you are taking the courses in the proper sequences. Try to plan
an alternative schedule in case one or more of the classes you request is closed or
cancelled.
