What is Early Start?
The California State University (CSU) system created "Early Start" to better prepare students in mathematics and English composition before their first term at the CSU, thereby improving their chances of completing a college degree. Incoming students who do not demonstrate readiness for college-level mathematics and/or English composition will be required to begin remediation during the summer before coming to the CSU.
Fast facts about Early Start
- Early Start is required for incoming freshmen who did not demonstrate readiness for college-level math and/or English on the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) and/or the English Placement Test (EPT), or other assessment methods.
- The program takes place the summer before the freshmen year.
- CSULA will inform students who must attend Early Start, how and where to sign up after they submit their Enrollment Confirmation Deposit.
- Early Start math and English courses will be available at every CSU campus and online.
- Financial aid will be available for those who demonstrate need via the FAFSA.

Who is required to participate in the Early Start Program?
Mathematics:
All students who have an ELM score less than 50. Note that students who were deemed conditionally exempt in mathematics based on the Early Assessment Program (EAP) do not have to participate. The EAP indicator can be found on a student’s STAR/CST score sheet issued at the end of junior year. Contact the EAP office at CSULA for additional information, (323) 343-3130..
English Composition:
All students who have an EPT score less than 138.
- International students and residents of other states.
- Students participating in the EOP Summer Bridge program or summer workshop program or the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology STEP program.
- Students exempt from the ELM and or EPT testing requirement based on their EAP, SAT, ACT, or AP test scores.
- NOTE: Exempt students, who still wish to participate in Early Start, are not eligible for an Early Start Program fee waiver.
I've been told I have to do Early Start, but I think I should be exempt. What should I do?
Your Early Start required participation is based on your EPT and ELM test scores. If you are exempt from the EPT and/or ELM based on your EAP, SAT, ACT, or AP test scores, then you are likely also exempt from Early Start. For more information, please call the CSULA Testing Center at 323-343-3160 to verify your exemption. Please have your CIN (campus identification number) on hand to better assist you.
What if I did not complete the EPT/ELM testing requirement by May 16?
If you missed the EPT/ELM testing deadline, and are not exempt from the requirement using other methods, you will not be allowed to enroll at CSULA for Fall Quarter 2013.
In what ways can I complete the Early Start Program?
You may complete the CSU Early Start Program by:
- Completing specified Early Start courses at CSULA;
- Completing Early Start courses at another CSU campus

How do I declare where my Early Start Program will be completed?
After submitting the Enrollment Confirmation Deposit, eligible students may begin to log on to GET to access the Early Start Smart Page and declare where Early Start will be completed. The Early Start Smart Page will be available on GET beginning May 1. Review our step-by-step instructions on how to access the Early Start Smart Page. The priority deadline to declare your Early Start plans is May 29, 2013. After May 29, students may still declare on a space available basis.
When do the Early Start classes start at CSULA?
Early Start classes will be offered over two sessions, during July and August 2013. Specific dates and times vary, depending on where you take the class and whether you need English composition and/or mathematics. If you are taking Early Start at CSULA but will attend another CSU campus in the Fall, you are considered a ‘service student’ and may only register for those sessions held in July. This will ensure that your campus will receive your Early Start credits in a timely manner.
What if I am not able to take the Early Start class in the summer?
If you have an extreme or extenuating circumstance beyond your control preventing you from completing the mandatory Early Start requirement during the summer, you can petition for an exception using the form available at the following address: http://www.calstatela.edu/academic/aa/ugs/3651pet.pdf
Complete the section entitled “Other”. Petitions must be submitted to the University Advisement Center, Library Palmer Wing, Room 1040A at Cal State L.A. Please include your name, CSULA CIN, and the purpose of and justification for the petition.
Is Student Housing available for students completing Early Start at CSULA?
Yes, housing is available for participants who are at least 18 years of age. Space is limited, and reservations available on a first come, first serve basis. If you are under 18 years old, please consider completing Early Start at a service CSU campus closer to your home.
