With Final
Cut Pro running, choose a clip and double click on
its icon in the Browser window.

This will
open the clip in the Viewer window.
Audio clips
will display in the Viewer window as audio "waveforms". |

Using
the controls at the bottom of the Viewer window,
navigate through the clip to find the part of it you
wish to use.
You can also
use keyboard shortcuts to navigate through the clip:
Spacebar =
Play, pause
J=Reverse
K=Pause
L=Play |

Next, mark
an "IN-POINT" at the beginning of the part of the clip
you wish to use, and an "OUT-POINT"
at the end.
Mark an "IN-POINT"
by pressing the "i" key on the keyboard. ("i" = "IN").
Mark an "OUT-POINT" by
pressing the "o" key on the keyboard. ("o" = "OUT").

IN
and OUT Points are marked in the playhead area with triangle/blue
line markers.
The highlighted
(white) portion of the playhead area is the part of the
clip that will be used. The shaded (gray) portions are
the parts that will not be used.
If you need
to change an In-point or Out-point, you can click and
drag the markers, or press the "i" or "o" key at a different
point in the clip.

To load the
clip into the timeline sequence, click and drag the clip
from the Viewer window to the desired Video Track (e.g.
"V1") in the timeline, and release it.
Your cursor
may appear as a downward pointing arrow ("Overwrite"
edit - will put the clip over another and replace all
or a portion of it)
OR as a righthand
pointing arrow ("Insert" edit - will insert the clip
into the timeline pushing over every clip to the right
of it).

To load an
AUDIO clip into the timeline sequence, click and drag
the clip
from the SPECIAL ICON in the Viewer window to the desired
Audio Tracks (e.g. "A1/A2")
in the timeline, and release it..

An "OVERWRITE"
edit replaces a clip or part of a clip already in the
timeline - Notice the cursor arrow points downward.

moves clips in the timeline to the right
- Notice the cursor arrow points to the righthand side.
