200 Introduction to Single Camera and Editing
An
introduction to fundamentals of single camera production.
Students, working independently and in small groups, plan, shoot, and edit various short subject pieces such as interviews, music videos, and short narratives. This course familiarizes students with the basics of preproduction, production and postproduction with concentrations on camera operations, framing, composition, montage, and lighting.

201 Introduction to Television Studio Production
An
introduction to television production facilities and
techniques.
TVF 201 is the entry level TV studio course at Cal
State
L.A. Students learn to write, produce, and direct their
own live 3-camera studio productions. They also learn
basic skills in camera operation, lighting and sound,
as well as organized pre-production and crewing in
a studio environment.
The
student should be able to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in the class
to produce limited video tape productions.

301 Intermediate Television Studio Production
An
intermediate course in multiple camera television production.
Each member of the class produces and directs projects
ranging from music
videos to dramatic scenes. Members
of the class participate as crew on various productions.
The objective of the course is to teach students the
skills necessary to produce and direct music and dramatic
multiple camera
television productions. Emphasis is
on preparation, professional
production techniques, composition, montage, and control room
techniques.
All members of the class need to know and use the skills of
the craft including all pre-production, production, and post-production
skills. i.e. directing, producing, camera operation, lighting,
audio, technical direction, on camera techniques etc.

introduction to the television production of
commercials .
The objective of the course is to familiarize students
with the principles of the process involved in creating commercials
for television. This includes an understanding of the skills
brought to bear by the client, the agency and the creative
groups from pre-production
to production and finally to post-production. The student
should be able to apply the knowledge and skills acquired
in the class to produce a PSA or short marketing video on
behalf of a local non-profit organization..

partnership with
LA cable broadcaster,
LA36, students will
write, produce, direct,
shoot, and edit material
for broadcast. Subjects
include public service
announcements, LA
lifestyle pieces,
short documentary
and news stories.

introduction into the creation of professional
quality DVD content. Students develop skills
in design, layout, interactivity, and media
encoding through the use of DVD Studio
Pro.
Students
in the Final Cut Pro advanced effects
course explore
and build skills in compositing, keyframing,
graphics, multilayer effects editing,
customizing filters and transitions.
Topics
include: Studio and Field lighting techniques;
Lighting instrument selection and placement;
Grip equipment and expendables; Artistic and
functional lighting design and applications.
This
course provides students with an introduction
to the basic and intermediate functions of
digital nonlinear postproduction using Final
Cut Pro.

365 Intermediate Scriptwriting
Techniques
of feature film writing, script story theory, structure
and analysis. Lecture and workshop-based, computer-assisted
feature script development and writing. Typed story
synopsis required for first class meeting.

377 Introduction to Animation
TVF
377 is an entry level course in traditional hand drawn
character animation. Students complete four introductory
exercises (asterisk hold, bouncing ball, rocking egg,
and walk cycle), to learn skills that can be used in
their final projects. They then present a storyboard
for a 15 second animated film, designing characters,
storyline, and soundtrack, and spend the rest of the
quarter working on their first animated project.

378 Writing and Storyboarding for Animation
TVF
378 teaches the fundamental principles of storyboarding
and the art of telling a story visually. Students complete
several different storyboards throughout the course
of the quarter. Each board should advance the students’ skills
in terms of story structure, dramatic conflict, character
design, movement, framing and camera angles.

381 Advanced Animation
TVF
381 continues principles learned in the Intro to Animation
class. Students do more advanced exercises (the blink
cycle or facial expression, flour sack carry, the sneak,
and the 4-legged walk cycle). They then present a storyboard
for a 30 second project. In this class, students can
choose to work in a variety of techniques, such as
ink-and-paint, rotoscope, colored pencil, as well as
any 2D software program (Flash, Toonboom) that they
are familiar with. Some students also incorporate Photoshop
and Final Cut Pro editing into their pieces. The course
is repeatable and students may choose to do longer
form projects over two quarters.

397 Cinematography
Principles
and
practices in motion picture photography including
directing for single camera, camera operation,
lighting, and editing. Students learn to operate Arriflex 16mm motion picture cameras, light meters, and lenses and shoot short subject films. Special areas of concentration include techniques involving exposure, composition, lens selection, framing, color temperature, picture depth, and lighting. Equipment, film stock, processing, and transfer is provided by the department.
