Writing Proficiency Exam

All Cal State L.A. undergraduates and most graduate students must satisfy the Graduate Writing Assessment Requirement (CSU Executive Order 514) by taking the Writing Proficiency Exam (WPE). Students take the WPE by enrolling in a section of the UNIV400.

Via GET, enroll in an open section of UNIV400. Once registered, the date, time, and location will appear on View My Schedule. There is a $25 non-refundable fee that must must be paid at the Cashier's Office once fully registered.

Please contact our office if you have any trouble adding the exam to your class schedule.

The EPT and the ELM Placement Exams

Effective Fall 1998, Executive Order 665 requires all incoming freshman in the CSU take the English Placement Test (EPT) and the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) test prior to enrollment in the CSU unless exempt by means scores earned on the ACT/SAT/EAP.  These are not admissions tests, but rather placement tools that will determine your eligibility to enroll in specific math and/or English courses.
