Common Program Planning Pitfalls

No one plans to fail. Many fail to plan!  The following are guidelines as to why some student organization programs fail.  Keep these in mind so your organization can avoid costly mistakes.

  • Choice of Topic:                
    • Not of general student interest       
    • Students not involved in planning
    • Perception (fault with the design of the publicity)
  • Poor Design of Program:              
    • Not well planned
    • Not setting good goals
    • Reaching the wrong group
  • Poor Publicity:                          
    • Not eye catching                       
    • Not enough info
    • Too cluttered
    • Not distributed far enough in advance
    • Not creative or informative
    • Poorly placed publicity
  • Choosing a poor location:            
    • Too far from students
    • Too cold/too hot - uncomfortable
    • Little known location
    • Many distractions
  • Choice of Facilitators:                 
    • Poor interpersonal skills
    • Not knowledgeable
    • Poor speaker/ unprepared
    • Lack of understanding about the topic
    • Doesn’t show up to perform
  • Timing:                                                
    • Conflict with academics
    • Conflict with other activities, religious holidays
    • Wrong time of the day
    • Length of the program
