Student Tuition Fee

At its July 12 meeting, the CSU Board of Trustees increased tuition by 12 percent, effective at the beginning of the Fall 2011 term. The Board’s action was precipitated by a final state budget that cut state funding to the CSU by $650 million for 2011-12. The Legislature had already approved a $500 million cut to the CSU in March, and enacted an additional $150 million cut when several temporary taxes expired June 30. This budget includes the possibility of an additional CSU cut of $100 million in December 2011, based on whether state revenues meet budget act assumptions.

The 12 percent increase raises tuition by $196 per quarter for full-time undergraduate students, $226 for credential program participants and $240 for graduate students. One-third of the tuition increase, however, goes toward financial aid. With State University Grants, Cal Grants, Pell Grant awards, funding for work/study and newly expanded federal tax credits, nearly half of all undergraduates will receive assistance with these costs. In November 2011, the Board will review whether adequate funds are being provided by the current budget to determine whether further fee increases will be required.

The CSU makes every effort to keep student costs to a minimum. However, fees listed in published schedules or student accounts may need to be increased when public funding is inadequate. CSU has reserved the right, even after initial fee payments are made, to increase or modify listed fees, without notice, until the date when instruction for a particular quarter has begun.
