RESEARCH INTERESTS

The research for the dissertation relates to ethnicity, diagnosis and the interplay of these two variables upon the diagnostic process. The name of my dissertation was entitled Factors Influencing Diagnosis of Ethnic Minority Inpatients in Public Facilities. The purpose of my dissertation was to determine whether DSM-III-R diagnoses differ significantly between Black, White and Hispanic patients. This study compared the total enumeration of the Los Angeles county’s caseload from diverse urban gender-ethnic inpatient groups across a one-year period from July 1, 1993 through June 30, 1994, to examine: (1) whether there was a difference in diagnosis by patient ethnicity among an urban inpatient population after covarying for demographic and predictor variables and (2) whether differences existed in terms of the diagnoses given by diagnosticians of various ethnicity’s. Subjects were obtained from the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health Management Information System (MIS).
  • My committee members were as follows: Halford H. Fairchild, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology and Black Studies at Pitzer College; Richard Mendoza, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Psychology, California School of Professional Psychology, Los Angeles Campus, and Maurice Weise, M.D., Chief Psychiatrist, Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. My immediate plans include writing the manuscript for publication in major journals. My goal is to publish research and write several books about ethnic minority mental health issues. I am also gathering research to study the attitudes of students, faculty/staff, and clinical supervisors toward learning disabilities. I am focusing on students in undergraduate and graduate programs, and whether providing accommodations for learning disabilities affects teacher competency.
