The Provost's Message

May 1, 2017
Provost Lynn Mahoney

As President Covino regularly affirms, supporting our students is our highest priority. Academic Affairs provides a myriad of support services for students, including Student Learning Centers and Student Success and Advising Centers. The Division of Student Lifeprovides an array of health & wellness support for students. At the best of times, the end of the term poses challenges for some students. During our current, uncertain times, students may need even more support. Please see below for an important message from Vice President Nancy Wada-McKee about how the CARE Team can help.

This is a busy time of the year for all, as we help students prepare for finals and register for next year and work diligently to conclude this year’s committee work and initiatives. As always, thank you!

Message from Wada-McKee

As the end of the semester approaches, it is a good time to remember that the CARE Team is here to help. The CARE Team is a campus resource for faculty and staff who have concerns regarding students who need help and support or who exhibit problematic or disruptive student behavior. The team responds to non-emergency concerns and uses a proactive approach to intervene early, discuss potential problems and develop appropriate courses of action for referred students.  For example, in AY 2016-2017:

  • The CARE Team communicated with approximately 690 Cal State LA faculty and staff members regarding students of concern. Through communication and collaboration, appropriate resources and safety plans (as needed) were provided;
  • 122 students received critical resources to support their health and well-being such as counseling, hospitalization, and/or class accommodations; and
  • 521 students were assisted by partnerships between the CARE Team and Student Conduct to address concerning student behavior that required extended case management and/or conduct proceedings.

The CARE team includes representation from Counseling and Psychological Services, Student Health Center, Office of the Dean of Students, Housing and Residential Education, Office for Students with Disabilities, and Public Safety.  To learn more or submit a report, please visit the CARE Team webpage. For more information, please contact Dean of Students Jen Miller at (323) 343-6317 or jennifer.miller@calstatela.edu.
