The Committee Letter
The Health Careers Evaluation Committee (HCEC) is composed of current CSULA faculty who will evaluate an applicant’s complete application package and potentially write a committee letter endorsing their application to health professions schools. In order to be evaluated, an applicant’s file must be complete and the applicant must provide evidence that the health professions programs of interest wish to receive a Committee Letter. Briefly, the list of items includes:
a. HCAO Enrollment Form
b. Resume or curriculum vita
c. Minimum of 3 letters of recommendation (accompanied by Buckley waiver forms)
d. Copy of the completed health professions application (AMCAS, etc)
e. National exam scores (MCAT, DAT, etc)
f. Unofficial copies of transcripts from all colleges attended (including CSULA)
The Committee Letter summarizes all of the information in your file, including details about your personal history especially any challenges or obstacles you may have overcome, academic performance, extracurricular activities such as clinical and volunteer and research experiences, and a summary of salient comments from recommendation letters.
The HCEC meets during the first week of each month during the Spring, Summer and Fall quarters. To be considered by the committee, have all requested materials in your file at the HCAO by the end of the preceding month. For example, if you wanted to be evaluated in the August meeting, your file must be complete by the last day in July. You must also email the Health Professions Advisor at healthcareers@calstatela.edu with subject "Committee Letter Request", to request that your file be submitted for evaluation by the last day of the preceding month.
You should allow two weeks for the HCEC to evaluate your application package and write your Committee Letter, if we choose to endorse your application. Consider your deadlines when you plan on a timeline to complete your file. We cannot write your Committee Letter until your file is complete.
Students not endorsed by the HCEC may continue to use the other HCAO services.
