California State University, Los Angeles’ English Language Program (ELP) strengthened higher education relations between Mexico and the U.S. by participating in Proyecta 100,000. The Proyecta 100,000 initiative aspires to advance 100,000 Mexican learners through scholarships funded by the Mexican government for the study of short-term English language courses in universities across the United States by 2018. Cal State L.A. hosted over 300 students, the largest number of students in all of California and the third largest student group in the U.S.

Students increased their English language skills by staying with local American host families and attending intensive daily classes. Classes were held for the duration of a month on the campus of Cal State L.A. and covered English conversation, grammar, and American culture. Proyecta students in their freetime also participated in field trips and had the opportunity to explore Los Angeles, nearby landmarks and famous tourist attractions before returning home to Mexico.
