In January 2015, Cal State L.A. was selected among 12 institutions in the United States to participate in a new academic partnership program with the Norwegian Centre for International Collaboration in Education and the Institute of International Education (IIE). The inaugural Norway initiative of IIE’s International Academic Partnership Program aims to expand U.S.-Norwegian engagement and foster strategic university partnerships.
Dean of the College of Professional and Global Education, Eric Bullard and Associate Professor, Dr. Pacheco-Vega, of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Cal State L.A. traveled to Norway visiting the cities of Oslo, Trondheim, Tromso, and Bergen from April 18-24 to represent the University and foster the partnership between research and higher education between the U.S. and Norway.
Dean Bullard and Dr. Pacheco-Vega had the opportunity to visit key universities in Norway and take part in roundtable discussions regarding higher education and its potential future between the U.S. and Europe with more than 20 universities, including: University of Oslo, Norwegian University of Life Sciences, University of Tromso, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Bergen University College, and Bergen Academy of Art and Design.
As higher education is a leading instrument for cultivating and promoting economic development, Dean Bullard and Dr. Pacheco-Vega also visited several key government, research, and business organizations in Norway, which included: Norwegian Department for Higher Education, Embassy of the United States in Norway, Norwegian, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Fram Centre Polar Research Institute, Statoil, and Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research.
The visit to Norway and participation in the initiative has already resulted in discussions about faculty research and collaboration, student exchange, and study abroad programs between Cal State L.A. and several Norwegian institutions.
