Introduction to the WASC
Report The purpose of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) is the continual improvement of education and cooperation among educational institutions and agencies. Each institution is responsible for defining what it considers characteristics of quality and excellence and presenting evidence that such quality and excellence are being achieved. WASC is one of the six regional accrediting associations covering the United States and functions through a board of directors and three accrediting commissions. The commission through which Cal State L.A. seeks reaccreditation is the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities. The accreditation process includes the preparation of the self-study, visit by a team representing the Commission, team report to the Commission, and recommendation by the Commission. The visiting team will be on campus March 30 through April 1, 1999, with the recommendation from the Commission expected in July 1999. The 1999 report includes the following: certification of the self-study, statement of organization of the self-study, descriptive background and history of the institution, demographic information, responses to areas of concern expressed by the Commission in 1990, abbreviated responses to the nine compliance standards, integrative chapter, and appendices related to the standards. In addition, there are three special reports--Assessment of Student Outcomes, Student Satisfaction, and Technology in the Instructional Environment. A hard copy of the report is available in each school and department office. The time given by faculty who served on committees (see "Organization of the Self-Study" for a list of committee members) and by those who reviewed the drafts and made comments was greatly appreciated—thank you. The report reflects the comments that were given by many members of the University. |
