The starting pay rate for tutors is $9.25 per hour and we accept both workstudy and non-workstudy students. We pride ourselves on being able to offer one of the highest paid student positions on campus and hope to attract the most qualified candidates to fill our prestigious tutoring slots. We hire the majority of our tutors in September before the start of the Fall Quarter, however we accept applications at any time throughout the year. We seek both undergraduate or graduate students with a minimum overall GPA of 2.75 who are able to teach either math or English, and have mornings free to work at various middle schools. We will attempt to place you at a middle school near your home. Most tutors work approximately 14-20 hours per week, and typically tutor in the morning from 8 a.m. to noon.

As with any other career that deals extensively in interacting with people, we want tutors who communicate clearly, are patient with our students, and who demonstrate a willingness to teach others. Our tutors are of ALL majors and ethnicities, which helps to serve our diverse student population. In addition, many of our tutors have obtained teaching positions at the very schools they once tutored at.

Qualifications Necessary for all Tutoring Positions

  • Concurrent enrollment at CSLA as a graduate or undergraduate student during the quarter in which you wish to work
  • Upper division or graduate standing (exceptions made for lower division undergraduate students who have either taken advanced English or Math classes for their class level or who demonstrate an ability to consistently maintain high grades in English or Math).
  • Access to own transportation and can provide a copy of a current driver's license and insurance
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to evaluate individual student performances and progress
  • An e-mail account and the ability to regularly check e-mail and the website for current news and information
  • Commitment to attend weekly training sessions
  • Maintaining good academic standing
  • The ability to work independently
  • ENGLISH TUTORS ONLY: Passing English 411 or its equivalent with a grade of 'B' or better
  • MATH TUTORS ONLY: Passing Calculus with a grade of 'C' or better
