The internet and magazines are the perfect place for companies to advertise their various martial arts training videos to you. But have ever real take a look at what's out there? Some of the larger companies are marketing hundreds to thousands of videos, with hundreds more selling 10 - 20 of their own as well. That leaves us the consumer of these martial arts videos with literally thousands of videos on hundreds of topics to choose from. So what do we choose?
Traditionally, martial arts products could only be advertised through martial arts magazines. but with the internet and emails, marketing has become so much easier. So, now more companies can get to you to try to get you to buy their videos, but how do you truly know if the material on the tape is what you want, or worth the investment? What does that mean for us? Simple, you buy the tape, company says, "bye bye," to you. They have your money, now they don't worry. ALL SALES FINAL!
Now how does that sit with you? With the cost of videos ranging from as low as $20 a tape to as much as $50, we really can't afford to be spending money on something that isn't valuable to our libraries.
Unlike most products sold in the USA, not a single company we know of has a satisfaction guarantee on their products. When confronted with the question of why they don't, they stated that if they did allow returns because one wasn't satisfied with the product because if we did, some people might just make copies of the tapes and return them. What does that mean for us. Simple, you get what you pay for.
As of late, there has been a few sources of FREE and UNBIASED sources of reviews of these videos. However, as of recent, not many videos have been added, and the rate has slowed down. MAC is a group of students dedicated to the martial arts. As a whole, we represent such diverse backgrounds in TKD, Judo, Jujitsu (Brazilian), Capoeira, Taijiquan, Wing Chun, Karate, Kali/Escrima/Arnis, Boxing, and Kuk Sool Won, to name a few. We feel that with such a diverse background as a whole, we would best be able to provide you with one of the few FREE and UNBIASED resources of reviews of these videos.
Each quarter we'll review as many videos as we can. They will be done on a first-come-first-served basis, and there will be a uniform grading system. If you don't see at least some of a companies videos listed here, contact the company or individual that markets them and ask them why? If they give some lame excuse, tell them fine, but you would prefer, due to the number of tapes on the market, return policies, etc., to have us review their product first. If you the readers and consumers of these products get behind us on this, we can make a difference. We need everyone's support, and we're already well on our way with the backing of several major companies. If these companies say fine who do I contact? Give them our e-mail (firstname.lastname@example.org), web address (calstatela.edu/orgs/mac), and/or mailing address, and tell them to send us some of their product(s). If they say they don't want us to review their products, think long and hard, ask yourself why, what is it they have to hide, and is this the type of company I want to do business with. Many of these companies spend hundreds, some thousands, of dollars a month on advertising and direct mail. Surely they can afford to spend some pocket change and at least send us a tape or two for review purposes, especially if they feel they have a worthwhile product. Heck, we've even gone as far as to make the "good faith gesture" of offering to pay for these companies postage, and a buck or two for the cost of their tapes. And that offer still stands. As we said before, if they won't agree to those arrangements, ask yourself why, and think long and hard before you buy from them.
At the present time, we are trying to do new Reviews a couple of times per week, but we're university students, so bear with us. This could change though, so check back often.
There are several companies we've contacted and still haven't heard back from. Hmm wonder why? Anyway if you know of other companies not listed here, drop them a note and tell them to send us a couple of their tapes.
