Cal State LA Here We Come!
Friday, April 21st, 2017
“Cal State LA, Here We Come!” is an annual event designed to expose elementary school children to a college day on our campus. The event exposes children to campus-wide facilities (labs, lecture halls, green house, athletics, food court), as age-appropriate academic-based presentations are delivered as they would within the specific learning setting for our college students. Children are coordinated into groups by grade level (estimating 22 groups of 15-20 children). All groups will visit three separate presentations. This event serves as a campus-wide co-curricular service opportunity, and we typically engage up to 200 campus-wide volunteers. Individual student volunteers assist with escorting groups of children throughout the day. Faculty and student volunteers lead presentations to expose children to disciplines, service learning students conduct student success presentations, and academic-based student organizations work together to conduct presentations. Athletics coordinates student athletes to do athletic demos, too. We have very profound partnerships with four nearby LAUSD elementary schools: Ann St. ES, Anton ES, Huntington Dr. ES, and Kennedy ES. The children receive an event t-shirt and goodie bags.
This volunteer event is open to all science majors!
