The SupermileageŽ competition
provides engineering and technology students with a challenging design
project that involves the development and construction of a single-person,
fuel-efficient vehicle. Vehicles are powered by a small four-cycle engine.
Students have the opportunity to set a world fuel economy record and
increase public awareness of fuel economy. Engines are donated by Briggs &
Stratton.
Essentially stock Briggs and
Stratton engine is a 3.5 hp engine designed for small lawn mower
applications. As this engine's design is for all conditions operation, as
well as efficient starting, it is not typically regarded as an efficient
power plant for producing motor force. The objective of the competition is
to attain the highest possible mileage for their one person vehicle, all of
which are powered by the same basic motor.
The California State
University, Los Angeles team employs sophisticated methods to improve our
efficiency. Some of these methods include advanced engine design
modifications, precision regulated electronic controls, aerodynamic body
design, composite materials fabrication, and custom lubrication agents.
CSULA proudly develops and fabricates all of its materials through the work
of dedicated students.
Our team pledges to
continuously update and improve the vehicle with the latest advances in
power and transportation technologies. With promising improvements
being made with research and development on the team, the 2007 SAE Supermileage
competition will certainly be better than our 2004 competition.
