What Is Formula SAE?
The Formula SAE competition is an annual competition developed by the
Society of Automotive Engineers, SAE. The competition is formulated to
challenge students in nearly every aspect of engineering, from
conceptualization to design then manufacturing. This process was
developed to encourage creative and innovative thinking. Our team of
student engineers is assuming the role of an engineering firm being
contracted by a manufacturer to produce a prototype racecar for limited
production.
We are asked to design a race car for a specific demographic, the
weekend racer. The project has some design requirements that must be met
in order to target the desired demographic, and we are asked to
creatively work them into our design. The project entails designing,
manufacturing, and testing a high performance small-scale formula
racecar using systems developed by our student-engineers. Our prototype
is then taken to compete in a racing event against various schools from
across the nation as well as top engineering schools internationally.
The event consists of performance and design events that test every
aspect of the car dynamically, from sprinting, braking, and track
endurance, and statically with engineering design, and cost analysis.
The end result is a great experience for young engineers in a meaningful
engineering project as well as the opportunity of working in a dedicated
team effort.
