Cal State L.A.’s nursing master’s degree program is one of the best in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Graduate Schools” rankings released today.
The nursing program is ranked 68th in the United States, moving up from 79th a year ago. The program was the only one in the 23-campus California State University system to be included in the magazine’s list of top 100 nursing schools.
“This national recognition, identifying our graduate school of nursing as one of the top 75 in the nation, reflects the excellence of our faculty and the caliber of our graduates who go on to make a difference in our community as educators and nurse practitioners,” said Dr. Lorie Judson, director of the School of Nursing at Cal State L.A.
Cal State L.A.’s nursing program is part of the College of Health and Human Services and has been operating for more than 60 years. About 150 students are currently enrolled in the graduate program, and approximately 400 others are undergraduate students. The program has 11 full-time faculty members.
Since 2000, when it began surveying nursing graduate programs, U.S. News has continuously rated Cal State L.A.’s nursing graduate program among the top five programs in California.
The graduate program offers a nursing education option as well as four nurse-practitioner options: primary and acute adult, family, and psychiatric/mental health.
In fall 2012, the School of Nursing launched its Doctor of Nursing Practice program, which is a consortium with Cal State Long Beach and CSU Fullerton. It is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
The school’s programs are approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing and are certified by the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education.
Other graduate programs at Cal State L.A. also made the U.S. News’ 2016 rankings. They are rehabilitation counseling (50th), social work (66th), fine arts (82nd), public affairs (97th), and speech-language pathology (131st).
The magazine said its rankings are based “solely on the results of peer assessment surveys sent to deans, other administrators, and/or faculty at accredited degree programs or schools in each discipline.”
