Master of Arts in Educational Foundations

The M.A. Program in Educational Foundations offers an interdisciplinary program that draws on conceptual and methodological frameworks from the humanities, social sciences, and behavior sciences to prepare professionals in educational settings to critically examine, understand, and respond to issues in urban schooling.  The fundamental goal of the program is to engage educators in the development of interpretive, normative, and critical perspectives on urban schooling and issues of equity and educational opportunity confronted by students from diverse social, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds.

Because it is designed to afford working adults the opportunity to complete graduate-level study with the greatest degree of flexibility, the following are unique features of the M.A. Program in Educational Foundations:

  • It accepts applications and admits students throughout the academic year*.
  • It affords students the opportunity to complete coursework on a full-time or part-time basis.
  • It allows students to complete required courses in the order that best meets their needs and schedules as working adults.

Given the degree of flexibility the Program seeks to maintain, it does not require students to follow a specific roadmap to graduation.  Each student is allowed to work with an advisor to develop an individual Program Plan that satisfies all program requirements and best meets the student’s academic objectives, and then allowed to work toward completion of said program while exercising the flexibility indicated above.

* Students must be admitted to Cal State LA before they can begin an M.A. program, and Cal State LA enforces particular deadlines for admission to graduate study; but once admitted to the Cal State LA for graduate study, students can apply for admission to the M.A. Program in Educational Foundations during any academic semester.  Students who are not already admitted to the Cal State LA for graduate study must apply via Cal State Apply (https://www2.calstate.edu/apply) and adhere to posted deadlines.
