RAY'S GUIDE TO GOURMET AND FRUGAL DINING

Raymond Lim

Hello there professors and fellow colleagues! This will be my "Pizza and Sandwich" issue: The following information is a compilation of places that I've had the pleasure of dining in. Please make note that the places I'm about to suggest are solely my opinion. If you disagree, or have comments, let me know through an article of response to The Looking Glass.

Belly Busters: This little shack is located on Valley Boulevard and the nearest cross street would be Atlantic Boulevard. This place makes the freshest cold cut sandwiches ever, and I recommend you try them. It also has the beefiest steak fries - a meal in itself. The prices here range from $2.50 to $4.50 a sandwich. I highly recommend you going here with a friend and split one of their famous "Belly Buster" sandwiches and an order of french fries. Their "Belly Buster" is a foot long submarine sandwich filled with lots of cold cuts, cheese and lettuce. They also have other traditional sandwich favorites such as Ham and Cheese, Vegetarian, and so on. Let me remind you that this little shack has outdoor seating and I wouldn't suggest dining here during extreme weather conditions.

The Hat: This other shack is located not too far from Belly Busters. This place is at 1 West Valley Boulevard and the nearest cross street is Garfield, north-west corner of the intersection. The place is known for their "Artery-clogging, still feel it in my stomach, dripping down on my shirt" pastrami-dipped sandwich. Yes, this would be a place I recommend for their famous dipped pastrami sandwich. As far as I know this place gets really crowded during lunch time so you should appropriate your time if you are planning to eat here. The prices for sandwiches range from $3.50 to $5.00. I would also like to remind you to drive safely around here. You see, there is sometimes a patrol officer sitting in the parking lot waiting to make his quota - this is from personal experience.

Shakey's Pizza: This restaurant is located on 2234 Valley Boulevard and the nearest cross street is Fremont. This restaurant was chosen not because of the fine pizza or sandwiches. It was chosen for the mere reason that they have had their "hump-day" special going on for quite a while. I recommend going there on Wednesdays only. Their special price for this pizza, mojo potato, and fried chicken buffet is $3.99 plus tax. What more can you ask for where there is a buffet of pizza, chicken and mojo potatoes for under 5 bucks. If you are planning to eat here, make arrangements to get there early because it gets really crowded during lunch time on this day. I also recommend you not to eat here right before an afternoon class for there is a tendency to get mighty sleepy right after gorging!

Angelo's Pizza: This restaurant is located at 1540 Valley Boulevard and seen between Atlantic and Fremont. They offer a lunch special of Italian favorites, such as spaghetti and lasagna which changes daily. I highly recommend their Deluxe pizza for you and several of your friends. The topping on this pizza pretty much covers all the ingredients you can fit on a pizza with the exception of anchovies. If you and your friends are a bit hungry, then try their Jumbo 20 inch diameter pizza. This pizza will definitely fill you and your class mates up right before class. The price of their lunch special are somewhere under 5 bucks and the jumbo pizza with one topping is just under 25 dollars. If I did my calculations right, five people sharing this humongous pizza can get filled up for only 5 bucks!
