The
Reference Center provides research assistance, as well as help
in locating and using all Library collections and materials.
The Center also refers patrons when appropriate. Librarians
provide subject-specific instruction in the use of electronic
and print resources, via one-on-one
tutorials or course-related
lectures.
- Access to the Library Web is provided on workstations located
in the Reference Center, and the most heavily used and current
print materials are also located in this area. Requests for
interlibrary loans should be submitted here.

- The Reference Center is the Library's main service center, where
research assistance is provided for all Library collections, including
circulating books, reference books, periodicals, online databases
and reference resources, Government Publications Collection, and Special
Collections. For more detailed information on these last two collections,
see below:
Government Publications Collection
Assistance in using this collection is provided by the Reference
Center, 1st Floor, Library North.
The Government Publications Collection is housed on the 2nd floor of
Library Palmer Wing. There you can find U.S. and California government
documents. The Library participates in the Federal Depository Library
Program and the California depository library program.
Special Collections
The Library maintains a number of special collections on specific
topics, such as the Perry Long Collection on Printing and Engraving,
and several noteworthy manuscript collections including the papers
of U.S. Congressmen Mervyn Dymally and Edward Roybal, and the Stan
Kenton Collection, which includes tapes, photos, music, and papers
relating to jazz. Special Collections materials do not circulate and
are for in-room use only.

The Music & Media Center houses the Cal State LA University Library's
collection of non-print (audio & visual) materials. The media
collections include: sound recordings (CDs and L.P. Records);
video recordings (VHS videocassette and DVD); Multimedia CD-ROMs;
and Music Scores. Audio-visual equipment is available in the Music
and Media Center for all formats. For additional information,

the Circulation Desk you may:
- check out books [Note: Books may also be checked out at the
Exits in both buildings.]
- register for a Library card
- pay fines
- place holds on materials either checked out by another patron
or listed as "in process" on the OPAC
- report books that are missing from the shelves.
- check out materials on reserve for a specific course
- pick up Interlibrary Loan materials that
were ordered for you
- buy materials from our Book Sale.
The Circulation Desk now sends circulation
notices by e-mail.
Reserves

- Students may look up materials professors have placed on reserve
by course name and number or professor name using the Reserves
Page of the Library Catalog.

- Professors may place books, articles, readings and special materials
assigned for specific courses on reserve. Reserve materials may
be checked out only for a limited time. Inquire at the Circulation
Desk.

- Materials not owned by the Library are usually available from
other libraries. Current students, faculty and staff of CSULA are
eligible for CSULA InterLibrary Loan services. You will need
your Golden Eagle
One Card to pick up all requests at the Circulation desk and to
make a Pharos request. Complete information about this service is
available on the Interlibrary
Loan pages.
Requested materials may be picked up at the Circulation
Desk. The Library will email you when requested items arrive.

to the Periodicals Dept.
- All periodicals (journals, magazines, and newspapers) are located
in this area. Assistance is provided in locating known items within
the Library's print or electronic periodical holdings. There is
a special section for current periodicals.
- To find articles in journals, magazines, or newspapers
go to Library Databases. To determine if the Library
has a periodical you need to search the Library
Journals database. It lists all Library periodical holdings,
both in paper copy and online. If the Library does not have a periodical
you may use the Pharos Interlibrary Loan Service to request a copy.

In many cases a copy of the article can be emailed to you as an
attachment.

- Photocopiers, a change machine, and a copy card machine are provided
for patron use.

- The collection development process is coordinated by the Collection
Development Librarian working closely with the Knowledge
Resources Task Force. The liaison
program, in which each campus Department designates a Library
Coordinator and the Library assigns each a Librarian, facilitates
the collection development process. The Library also designates
College-wide liaisons.
- The Technical Services Function Group ( 323-345-4898) is responsible
for purchasing, or otherwise acquiring, the materials designated
by Collection Development. Among its operations are ordering,
receiving, and cataloging books and media materials, placing and
renewing standing orders, and processing incoming gift materials.

- The LAO houses the offices of the University
Librarian and the
Associate University Librarian. All administrative support services,
such as fiscal services, personnel, development, and library facilities
are coordinated from this office. Inquiries regarding library policies
