About the Music & Media Center

The Music & Media Center houses the Cal State LA University Library's collection of non-print (audio & visual) materials.  The library's media is primarily a curriculum support collection, used by faculty in the classroom and students for class-related assignments and research projects.  While the media collection does contain popular works (i.e. Hollywood feature-films and popular sound recordings), they are purchased to support specific programs and courses of study at the University and therefore have limited circulation outside the library.  See Policies & Use of Collections for more information.

The music collection consists of sound recordings (CDs and L.P. Records) and printed music scores, used primarily by the faculty and students of the Department of Music.  The collection includes over 8000 compact discs, more than 8,000 L.P. phonograph records (85% classical, 10% jazz, 5% popular); and roughly 7,500 orchestral, chamber, vocal, and keyboard music scores (mostly classical).

The video collection includes more than 2,400 VHS videocassettes in all subject areas, and over 1,000 DVDs (Digital Versatile Discs).  The library has also begun to purchase interactive multimedia CD/DVD-Rom discs which can be used on the 2 multimedia computers in the Music & Media Center.  See Equipment & Services for more information about our viewing and listening facilities.
