Program Description

The Department of Sociology studies social behavior, social institutions, and social structure. It offers a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in Sociology as well as minors in Sociology and in Social Gerontology. The Department teaches a variety of subjects including race relations, marriage, religion, child development, aging, demography, crime, corrections, occupations, mass communication, social deviance, politics, social psychology, and classical and contemporary sociological theories.  The primary purpose of the academic program is to enhance students’ analytical abilities and understanding of social phenomena.

The Master of Arts degree in Sociology provides advanced study in sociological theory and methods of research.  The program prepares students for doctoral studies, teaching at the secondary or community college level, or working in a professional capacity in governmental or private agencies or organizations.

Chronological Coverage

Acquisition concentrates on recent imprints in areas of curricular interest. However, historical and theoretical aspects of sociology have no time restriction

Geographical Coverage

Primary emphasis is on the United States. There is also interest in Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

Other Resources

Sociology students are also supported by materials selected for other academic departments, most notably in the areas of Pan-African Studies, Chicano Studies, Asian American Studies, Liberal Studies, Women's Studies, Anthropology, Political Science, History and Psychology.

Exclusions
 

These guidelines do not include acquisition of materials on the sociology of the arts, military sociology and other specializations in the field not mentioned in the program description section above.
