Romelia Salinas Program Description The Department of Sociology studies social behavior, social institutions, and social structure. It offers a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in Sociology as well as minors in Sociology and in Social Gerontology. The Department teaches a variety of subjects including race relations, marriage, religion, child development, aging, demography, crime, corrections, occupations, mass communication, social deviance, politics, social psychology, and classical and contemporary sociological theories. The primary purpose of the academic program is to enhance students’ analytical abilities and understanding of social phenomena. The Master of Arts degree in Sociology provides advanced study in sociological theory and methods of research. The program prepares students for doctoral studies, teaching at the secondary or community college level, or working in a professional capacity in governmental or private agencies or organizations.

Other Resources Sociology students are also supported by materials selected for other academic departments, most notably in the areas of Pan-African Studies, Chicano Studies, Asian American Studies, Liberal Studies, Women's Studies, Anthropology, Political Science, History and Psychology.
