Program Description

The nursing curriculum prepares nurses for professional careers in the maintenance and promotion of health in institutional and community based settings.  The professional nursing curriculum leads to the Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Nursing.  A Master of Science degree in Nursing provides advanced study in selected areas.  The Post Master’s Certificate Program is offered for nurses who have a master’s degree

The School of Nursing also offers a credit certificate program in Obstetrics-Gynecology.  This program is designed to prepare registered nurses to assume expanded roles in the delivery of primary health care to ambulatory women.

Subject Parameters & Collection Levels

The general subject area is nursing specific areas include: administration, case management ambulatory care, health assessment, nursing care management, care of children, and nurse practitioner options: adult, family, pediatric and psychiatric care.

The collection is maintained at a level needed to support both undergraduate graduate and special instruction in nursing.  Emphasis is placed on current research in the field. Periodicals in print and electronic format provide access to current and retrospective research.  Specialized reference tools such as handbooks and dictionaries and current monographs are added to the collection enhance the needs of the students.

Advanced Basic materials are acquired for undergraduate programs.  Research level materials are selected to support the masters and post masters program.

Chronological Coverage

Emphasis is on the collection of current materials, generally published within the last three to four years.  Older materials may be considered if they are requested.

Geographical Coverage

The material in nursing describes subjects which are generally independent of geographical location.

Other Resources

Resources in government publication, biology, nutrition, communication, psychology, health science, and child and Family Studies, may be useful.  Additionally, resources available via the internet, document delivery, and interlibrary loan may also supplement to materials selected for the curriculum.
