Program Description

The Department of Mathematics offers the B. A. degree in Mathematics with options in general and in pure mathematics, and the single subject teaching option.  The B. S. degree in Mathematics includes options in general mathematics, pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and applied mathematics/computer science, plus a single subject teaching option.  The Department also offers a minor in mathematics for students majoring in other fields.  Holders of the Single Subject teaching credential in another subject may supplement that credential with an authorization in mathematics for teaching mathematics at any grade up through grade 9.  Students in the undergraduate majors complete programs preparing them for high school teaching, graduate study, or positions in government or industry.

The Department offers the M. S. degree in mathematics with either a thesis or a comprehensive examination option.  Subject options are available in general mathematics and applied mathematics.  Students in the master's program include teachers, others from industry, government, as well as those coming directly from undergraduate programs in mathematics or other fields.  Graduate teaching associate positions are available, especially in the many service courses offered by the Department.

The Department of Mathematics provides exceptionally large numbers of required service courses (e.g., calculus, statistics, etc.) for majors in many other curricula on campus, chiefly sciences and engineering.  In addition, the Department provides significant instruction through various (required) general education courses (algebra, general mathematics, statistics, etc.), as well as significant numbers of sections in subcollegiate courses based on students’ preparedness as measured by the ELM (Elementary Level of Mathematics) entrance examination.

Chronological Coverage

Emphasis is on contemporary materials to support the curriculum.  Historical material is selectively added which illustrates the development of the field over time.

Geographical Coverage

Generally N/A.  However, some effort is made to very selectively collect materials reflecting the global developments in mathematics over the millennia.
