Program Description

Latin American Studies is an interdisciplinary program that combines subject matter from several academic disciplines to give students a broad background encompassing the historical, political, social, cultural, economic and geographic aspects and language of the region, with an emphasis on the social sciences. It offers a Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Arts and a minor in Latina American Studies as well as a Multiple Subject Teacher Preparation Program option.

Chronological Coverage

Pre-colonial times to the present but emphasis is on current issues.

Geographical Coverage

The collection is responsible for acquiring materials about the entire Latin American and Caribbean Hemisphere south of the United States. Latin American and Hispanic communities in the United States are also a primary responsibility. Although no nation among the forty countries of the area is excluded, the collections geographic focus traditionally has been on Cuba and Mexico, and most recently, Central America.

Other Resources

Latin American Studies overlaps with romance languages (Spanish and Portuguese), political science, economics, education, history, literature and other social sciences.

Language

For purposes of general Latin American collection development, highest priority will be assigned to English-language acquisitions, supplemented where possible by Spanish-language research resources.
