Program Description

The Juvenile Collection represents the remainder of the curriculum and textbook center that the Library disbanded nearly twenty years ago.  Although much of the current collection would be considered older materials, a concerted effort has been made off and on for the last fifteen years to update the materials as funds permitted.  The Collection supports literature classes in English and various courses in Curriculum & Instruction, which focus on children’s and young adult books.  The materials are used on a regular basis by both current students and faculty and by teachers in the University’s service area.  Nearly 40,000 books have circulated over the last six academic years, which averages about 6,600 per year.

Subject Parameters & Collection Levels

The primary focus for collecting in the Juvenile Collection has been in several areas, but is concentrated on titles that support preschool through elementary school students.  Some materials are purchased for middle school and young adult readers when requested by the teaching faculty.

The Library has standing orders established with Yankee Book Peddler for various children’s literature awards.  These include but are not limited to Newberry, Caldecott, and Coretta Scott King award winners.  It was decided to cease purchasing young adult title winners unless requested by the faculty due to budget constraints.

The strengths of the Collection are three fold.  Folk tales from many cultures and countries support several current courses.  Bilingual titles mostly in Spanish and English are used frequently.  The Library has also been able to add Asian language bilingual books when available.  Multicultural books have been collected for many years.  The term multicultural is used here in its broadest definition to include not only ethnic groups but also alternative families.

In the last year the Liaison has been working closely with three new faculty members in Curriculum & Instruction to continue to build the collection in many areas.  Last year they focused on elementary mathematics and the sciences, in addition to fiction.  They are also actively pursuing with Library administration a means of making the area more attractive and more visible to users.

Chronological Coverage

Recently published materials are primary.  Some historical and out of print titles are purchased when requested by the faculty.

Geographical Coverage

Coverage is broad geographically.  Linguistically the collection is mostly in English.  However books in Spanish and various Asian languages are collected on a selective basis, in addition to the bilingual books discussed above.

Other Resources

The Collection is further supported by materials purchased by the liaisons responsible for the departments/divisions of English and Curriculum & Instruction.  These materials could include titles reviewing the field of children’s literature and those discussing the use of children’s and young adult literature in the classroom.
