Program Description

The curriculum of the School of Criminal Justice and criminalistics provides intensive study in the areas of criminal justice theory, research methodology and data analysis, criminal law, organizational functioning, program planning and criminalistics. The School offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice, a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice with options in Administration and Forensic Mental Health, and a Master of Science degree in Criminalistics.  Also offered is an undergraduate minor for students majoring in other fields, and a Law Enforcement Leadership Credit Certificate Program.

Chronological Coverage

Emphasis is on contemporary criminal justice materials. Some historical material is selected which illustrates the development of judicial organization, management and administration of justice in America, law enforcement and forensic science.

Geographical Coverage

Emphasis is on the United States. Materials which provide comparisons of foreign criminal justice systems, foreign innovations in crime prevention, corrections, investigation, administration, and training and also selected to support some 400 and 500 level courses. 

Other Resources

Materials from many other academic departments support required coursework in the program, including Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Geology, and Anthropology. Plans are underway for the Los Angeles Regional Crime Laboratory Facility to be built on campus. The new facility will house the LAPD and LASD Criminalistics Laboratories, along with the CSULA Criminal Justice Program and the CSULA chartered California Forensic Science Institute (CSFI).
