Program Description

The Department of Biological Sciences offers the B.S. degree in Biology, the B.S. degree in Microbiology (microbiology or clinical laboratory options), and the M.S. degree in Biology.  The Department participates in the interdisciplinary B.S. in Natural Science program which satisfies the subject matter requirements for the Single Subject credential in Science.  Holders of the Single Subject teaching credential in another subject may supplement that credential with an authorization in biology for teaching biology at any grade up through grade 12.  Minors in biology or microbiology are also offered.  A large service course component provides significant enrollments in several lower division General Education courses (BIOL 155, BIOL 158) as well as courses in several upper division themes.  A variety of teacher education courses of study require the basic biology sequence for majors.  In addition, numerous related life science curriculums (e.g., nursing) require significant coursework in the Department.  Finally, a one-year post-baccalaureate certificate program in Biotechnology and a post-baccalaureate certificate program for Pre-Health Professionals are also available.

Chronological Coverage

Emphasis is on contemporary materials to support the curriculum.  Some historical material is selected which illustrates the development of the individual areas of biological sciences, e.g., history of the conservation movement, history of mind-brain research, etc.

Geographical Coverage

Where applicable (e.g., botany, ecology, natural history, conservation, agriculture), emphasis is on the United States, primarily the Western States, with further emphasis on California. Materials on other geographical areas, especially relating to conservation, selectively cover the rest of North America, Mexico and Central and South America, the Caribbean, Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East, and are selected as required for 400- and 500-level courses.
