Encyclopedias, Handbooks, Dictionaries, etc.
For
facts or topic overviews use a dictionary, encyclopedia, handbook or an
almanac. These type of tools are useful for learning more about people,
places, events or issues in Chicano Studies and they usually provide additional
suggested readings for a topic. I have listed some of these tools below
with a brief description of its content and call numbers for your convenience.
(Note the majority are located in the reference area on the 1st

Americans
A reference volume supplying information on Hispanic notables.

Handbook of Hispanic Cultures in the
United States
This work attempts to contribute to knowledge about the most significant
aspects of Hispanic culture in the United States. It is divided into four
volumes; Vol. 1 Literature and Art, Vol. 2 History, Vol. 3 Sociology, and
Vol. 4 Anthropology. Each volume is composed of chapters written by specialists
in the areas and concludes with a bibliography and detailed index.

Hispanic American Almanac: A Reference Work on Hispanics in the
U.S.
Divided into 27 different chapters this almanac provides a chronology,
historical overview, facts and figures on a variety of topics including
law and politics, population growth and distribution, arts, theater, music,
and film. Concludes with a keyword index.

Arranged in alphabetical order by last name each entry includes a photograph

The Latino Encyclopedia
This six-volume encyclopedia was designed to provide current information
on Latino life in the United States. Entries vary in length from one paragraph
to several pages. It includes people, organizations, geographic locations,
history, entertainment, military activity, religion, family life, court
cases, and cultural movements.

Mexican American Biographies :A Historical Dictionary, 1836-1987
Identifies prominent figures in the Mexican American experience and
provides basic information from the time of the Texas Revolution in the
mid 1830s to the late 1980s.

Focuses on U.S. Latinos and Latinas who have made important contributions
