How to Use the OnDemand Player Module

OnDemand is a simple, easy to use Web-based training module that provides users with several methods of learning computer software applications. It allows users to view the steps of how the program works, to try the steps hands-on, and to test their knowledge of the steps before finishing up with a review of the material. This page provides step-by-step instructions on using the OnDemand Player Module.

Starting the Training

The OnDemand navigator window is divided into four panes: Outline, Playback Mode, Concept, and Introduction. The Outline pane is located on the left side of the window and displays a list of available topics grouped by software application. The Playback Mode pane is located on the top right portion of the window and displays the playback options for the selected topic as well as access to the help and preference settings. The Concept pane is located in the upper right portion of the window and provides conceptual information regarding the selected topic. The Introduction pane appears in the lower right portion of the window and provides introductory information for the selected topic.

To start the training:

  1. In the Outline pane, click the plus sign to the left of the selected software application (e.g., Microsoft Word 2007). The outline expands and reveals a list of skill levels for the selected application.

  2. Click the plus sign to the left of the selected skill level (e.g., Word 2007 Introduction). The outline expands and reveals a list of topics.
  3. Click the plus sign to the left of the selected topic (e.g. Exploring Word). The outline expands and reveals a list of lessons.
  4. Click the selected lesson title (e.g., Working with Word) to start the training. The Concept pane displays a brief summary of the selected lesson.

  5. To continue with the lesson, click the Next link in the upper right corner of the Concept pane. To return to a previous summary page, if applicable, click the Previous link.

    Note If Previous is the only link displayed, the user has reached the end of the lesson.

  6. If the Playback Mode pane displays in color, additional training options are available for the selected lesson. Select the desired mode to fully explore the lesson.

    Note The Playback Mode is not available for some lessons.

Using the See It! Mode See It! Mode Icon

The See It! mode enables users to learn a topic by watching a demonstration of the steps in a simulated environment. As steps are being performed, information is provided inside bubbles explaining each step.

See It! Mode Window

To use the See It! mode:

  1. Click the See It! icon in the Playback Mode pane. The See It! window opens.
  2. When prompted, press the [Enter] key to continue.
  3. If additional time is needed, click the Pause link in the bubble. When ready, click the Resume link to continue.
  4. For additional options, click the Actions link in the bubble. The Actions menu displays. To return to the demonstration, click Resume. To change user preferences, click Preferences. For assistance, click Help. To close the See It! window, click Close Topic.

  5. When finished, the See It! window closes automatically and returns the user to the OnDemand navigator window. To exit at any time, click the Close button in the bubble or press the [Esc] key.

Using the Try It! Mode Try It! Mode Icon

The Try It! mode enables users to learn a topic by practicing in a simulated environment with step-by-step instructions and guidance. If users make a mistake, they are prompted to try again.

See It! Mode Window

To use the Try It! mode:

  1. Click the Try It! icon in the Playback Mode pane. The Try It! window opens.
  2. Press the [Enter] key or click the Start link to start.
  3. Follow the instructions in the bubbles.
  4. For additional options, click the Actions link in the bubble. The Actions menu displays. To go to the next step, click Next Step. To return to the previous step, click Previous Step. To change user preferences, click Preferences. For assistance, click Help. To close the Try It! window, click Close Topic.

    Note Depending on the step, the Actions menu yields additional or fewer options.

  5. When prompted, press the [Enter] key or click the Finish link to complete the lesson. The Try It! window closes and returns the user to the OnDemand navigator window. To exit at any time, click the Close button in the bubble or press the [Esc] key.

Using the Know It? Mode Know It? Mode Icon

The Know It? mode enables users to test their knowledge of a topic in a simulated environment. After completing an assessment, users are presented with their score as a percentage of steps completed properly without assistance.

To use the Know It? mode:

  1. Click the Know It? icon in the Playback Mode pane. The Know It? window opens. The window displays a bubble with the score needed to pass.
  2. Press the [Enter] key or click the Start link to start the assessment.
  3. Complete all the steps as instructed in the bubbles.
  4. If users are unable to complete a step, they can click the Show Step link in the bubble.

    Note Users do not get credit for a step if Show Step is used.

  5. After completing the steps, press the [Enter] key or click the Continue link to view the results of the assessment.
  6. Press the [Enter] key or click the Finish link to close the Know It? window and return to the OnDemand navigator window. To exit at any time, click the Close button in the bubble or press the [Esc] key.

Using the Do It! Mode Do It! Mode Icon

With Do It! mode, users are guided through a task while they perform it in the live application. The top section of the Do It! window includes step-by-step instructions for completing the task. The bottom section of the window displays a graphic that illustrates how the screen should appear in the live application.

Do It! Mode Window

To use the Do It! mode:

  1. Click the Do It! icon in the Playback Mode pane. The Do It! window opens on top of the live application.
  2. Click the Next Step button to start.
  3. Perform the step displayed at the top section of the Do It! window.
  4. Click the Next Step button to proceed to the next step or to skip a step.

    Note To go back to a previous step, click the Previous Step button .

  5. After completing all the steps, click the Close button to close the Do It! window and return to the OnDemand navigator window.

Getting Help

The OnDemand Player Module includes a Help feature that can be used to find answers to questions that may arise while navigating through the module. Users can search for a specific topic or scroll through a list of help topics in alphabetical order. The Help window contains three tabs:

To use the Help feature:

  1. Click the Help link in the Playback Mode pane. The Help window opens.
  2. Navigate through the available topics or search for a specific topic using the Contents, Index, or Search tabs.

Setting Preferences

The Preferences feature allows users to change an array of Interface Options, such as marquee color or audio options.

To set preferences:

  1. Click the Preferences link in the Playback Mode pane. The Preferences window opens.
  2. To change the color of the marquee, click the Change button to the right of the Marquee color option. The default marquee color is red.
  3. To change the sound option, click the Play audio (if available) drop-down arrow and select the desired option.
  4. Change other options as desired.
  5. Click the OK button to apply the changes and to close the Preferences window.
