Mapping a Web Directory Using Windows Explorer

Windows Explorer allows you to map a web directory on the University Web server onto your computer. This allows you to manage your files directly on the server without having to use a FTP program. Once a drive is mapped, you can view, organize, and manipulate the contents of your Web directory as you would managr any file or folder on your own computer.

Note: You can map a drive only if you have an NT NIS Account.

Step-by-step Instructions

  1. Open Windows Explorer icon Windows Explorer.

  2. Click on the Tools menu and select Map Network Drive...

  3. The Map Network Drive window will open.

  4. Type the path of the Web directory you wish to map in the Folder: field.
    (Example: Path to main Web Server is \\www\www\)

    Note: Check to select the Reconnect at Logon checkbox if you would like the Web directory to be mapped every time you log into the computer.

  5. Click on the Finish button.

  6. Your computer will connect to the University web server and open a new Windows Explorer window with the contents of the directory you mapped.

  7. Within the first Windows Explorer window, the mapped directory will appear as another drive listing. You may work with your Web directory from either window.
