Computer Training

The ITS Training Program provides students with free training in the latest software available on campus. Workshops include multipart series for all programs in the Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, and Publisher), Outlook Web Access student email, Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Flash and Dreamweaver, HTML, statistical analysis using SPSS, advanced capabilities using Excel and Word, how to make effective group presentations, and several more. Workshop participants receive detailed handouts and practice actual examples at individual computer workstations. For the current schedule of workshops, visit http://www.calstatela.edu/training.

Dialing Connection for Windows XP

Faculty, staff, and students can access e-mail and the Internet from their home computer using Windows XP to establish a dial-up connection utilizing their local telephone line. The connection can be established as long as the individual has a valid NIS account, an active modem phone line, and the Internet Explorer web browser installed on the computer. Windows XP provides a built-in capability to establish a dial-up connection using the New Connection Wizard. A handout describing the details and step-by-step instructions to set up the connection is available at http://www.calstatela.edu/its/docs/pdf/dialing.pdf. (The Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view the handout). TOP

First Aid Kit

Many home computers that are connected to the Internet are vulnerable to intrusions that appear in different forms ranging from irritating pop-up windows to viruses capable of destroying data and completely disabling the machine. The First Aid Kit is a group of Web sites designed to address these vulnerabilities. The sites include information on anti-virus, anti-spyware, and anti-spam programs as well as the Windows XP Service Pack 2 update, how to clear your browser cache, and turning pop-up blocker services off. Details can be found at http://www.calstatela.edu/its/firstaid/.

Effective Winter 2008, students will be required to use their NIS accounts to log into ALL computing resources including classroom and Open Access Lab computers.
